Sign of Progress

This morning on the Washington Post website I ran across this piece of good news about today's suicide bombings in Iraq that killed dozens of people:

President Bush this morning said the increasing attacks on U.S. personnel and supporters in Iraq are a sign of progress because the attacks indicate Iraqi opponents are getting increasingly desperate.

This isn't a sign of "progress" — it's a disaster, and needs to be reacted to as such. But for our Pollyanna President, there's no such thing as bad news — all the "facts" simply confirm what he wants to believe in the first place. If there weren't lives at stake, this kind of willful disconnect might be amusing. In the real world, though, it's completely inexcusable.
