A Generous Take
David Broder notes that the Republicans, who made term limits a centerpiece of the "Contract with America" in 1994, have now completely abandoned the notion. He says that this "represents an acknowledgment on the part of Republicans that running government is a serious business in which experience counts." Come on, David! When the GOP was on the outside looking in, calling for term limits made political sense (if bad policy). The GOP isn't calling for term limits anymore because they are the ones in power now. It's that simple. Why Broder feels compelled to dress up this kind of calculated polical hypocrisy as principle, I can't imagine.
