Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore & the Duomo

The construction of Santa Maria del Fiore began in 1296 and the dome was completed in 1469. Work was interrupted by various deaths of architects and artists, plagues passing through Florence, and various scandals. But, in 1469 the cupola was completed with the installation of a copper ball on top of the dome.
