Using a Motorola HS820 Headset with a Motorola RAZR V3

In August 2005, I bought a Motorola RAZR V3 phone and a Motorola HS820 bluetooth headset. I had no problem getting the headset to pair with the phone, but for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to make the headset reconnect automatically after turning it off and then turning it on again. I now have everything working, and just in case anyone else has been facing this same problem, here's what to do:

  1. Make sure the phone is turned on and the headset is turned off.
  2. To turn on the headset and put it in pairing mode, press and hold the multifunction button. After two or three seconds, the blue light will flash three times, but don't let up until the light goes solid blue.
  3. On the phone, do Menu > Settings > Connection > Bluetooth Link > Setup, and set the power to "On".
  4. On the phone, do Menu > Settings > Connection > Bluetooth Link > Handsfree > Look For Devices. After the scan, you should have a list of results with "Motorola HS820" on it; select that result. Answer "Yes" to bond with the device, and enter '0000' as the passkey. The phone will then connect to the headset.
  5. Turn off the headset by holding down the multifunction button for a few seconds. The phone will pop up a message saying the device has been disconnected.
  6. Turn on the headset again by holding down the multifunction button until the blue light flashes three times, then release the button. The headset should automatically reconnect with the phone.

It was the last step that tripped me up for a while. When I would turn the headset back on, I would keep the button pressed too long and put it into pairing mode. I would then have to go through the whole process of re-pairing with the headset just to get it to work. Holding the button down only long enough to turn it on solved the problem.
