746

According to Forbes, there are 746 billionaires in the world. That's quite a lot, and more than I thought there would be as I was waiting for the story to load. The article doesn't include their collective net worth, but the top ten clock in at a cool $275.4 billion — more than the GNP of all but 17 countries.

I was surprised to see whose name was at the bottom of the list, tied for 746th place with $1 billion even — Jerry Zucker from SC. I'm pretty sure he's the only person on this list that I have ever met. Not the most exciting "brush with fame", but it's all I got in the billionaire department.

Very cool, Eric. I looked at the list to see where Rupert Murdoch fell, because I've met him a few times, and rode an elevator with him once, back when I still worked at Fox stations and was on the Fox Program Executive Council. I wish I could say something nice, but all I remember was thinking that he smelled like licorice.

Much more interesting to me is #258, John Abele. His son Chris shared a Somerville/Cambridge-area apartment with my friend M. when we were all first out of college—they'd been high school friends. I stayed with them a few times when I visited Boston, and found him unfailingly polite in a laid back sort of way. I knew he came from money, but didn't learn until later how MUCH money; I'd like to think I wouldn't have been intimidated. The nicest things I can recall is that he recommended some really good books during a late-night literature conversation, and that he was a genuine and deeply loyal friend to M.
